Preben Holst bruker fotografi, video og objekter
for å beskrive overgangen fra barn til voksen, en tematikk som lenge har vært sentralt i hans
kunstnerskap. Things that Never Happened and Other Stories tar utgangspunkt i en barndom som er på vei til å gli unna. Det er en til tider surrealistisk verden, men likevel en del av vårt
kollektive minne. Guttene i motivene har en naturalistisk tilstedeværelse, men de gir en falsk
intimitet. De er modeller som inntar forskjellige positurer, iblant for å fremheve hvordan de selv
ønsker å fremstå for omverden, iblant for å fremheve kunstnerens egne projiseringer. Holst
velger her å bryte med den dokumentariske tradisjonen som finnes i eksempelvis Sally Manns
eller Larry Clarks skildringer av tenårsperioden. Men felles for dem alle tre er at
det er betrakterens blikk som står i sentrum.
Preben Holst arbeider plasspesifikt. Han bygger opp
en scenografi i utstillingsrommet som hensetter betrakteren i en stemning som
forhåpentligvis tilbakefører en til den ambivalens som tenårsperioden innebærer. En ambivalens som
peker på forvirringen, alt det ubegripelige, men også på det store eventyret som
ligger foran oss.
Preben Holst er født 1974 i Kristiansand. Han gikk
ut fra Malmö Kunsthøyskole i 2009. I 2008 ble Holst tildelt Victor-stipendiet i
forbindelse med utstillingen Ny Nordisk Fotografi på Hasselblad-stiftelsen i Göteborg. Han har tilbrakt det siste året på
London College of Communication som Victorstipendiat. Preben Holst bor og
arbeider i Køpenhavn. Dette er Preben Holsts første separatutstilling i

Omvisning i utstillingen
Preben Holst uses photography, video and objects to describe the
transition from child to grownup, a central theme in his work. The exhibition Things
that Never Happened and Other Stories depicts a childhood slipping away, a
transition that can from time to time appear as surreal but that is still part
of our collective memory. The boys depicted seem to be in their natural habitat
but this intimacy is false. They are models posing, sometimes to show how they
would like to appear to the world, other times as a result of the artist’s own
projections. Here Holst chooses to brake with the documentary genre found in
the work of Sally Mann and Larry Clark’s accounts of teenagers for example,
although they do share a common interest in the viewers gaze.
Preben Holst presents his work in a site specific environment. He builds
a theatrical scene in the exhibition space with an atmosphere that hopefully
brings back the ambivalence of our own teenage years. This ambivalence points
towards all that is confusing and incomprehensible, but also towards the big adventure that lies ahead.
Preben Holst was born 1974 in Kristiansand in Norway. He graduated from
Malmö Art Academy in 2009. In 2008 he received the Hasselblad Foundation Victor
Fellowship in Photography in Gothenburg. As part of the Victor Fellowship
Preben Holst spent 2009/2010 at the London College of Communication. He now lives and works in Copenhagen, Denmark.
This is Preben Holst's first solo presentation in Oslo.
