Oslo Kunstforening seeks an Artistic and Managing Director

Oslo Kunstforening was established in 1836 and is the oldest art institution in Norway. Oslo Kunstforening's purpose is to promote interest in and disseminate knowledge about contemporary art and the role of art in society. This is achieved through exhibitions, lectures, conversations, seminars, and the publication of books and other publications. Oslo Kunstforening is part of a network of contemporary art institutions in Norway and maintains a wide range of international contacts.

Oslo Kunstforening is located in the historic district of Kvadraturen in Oslo. The institution has a staff of five employees in full- and part-time positions and an annual turnover of just over 7 million NOK. As the current director will be taking up another position in the summer of 2026, Oslo Kunstforening is seeking a new director. The board is looking for a skilled and independent individual who can further develop Oslo Kunstforening as a contemporary art institution, both through outward-facing activities and through the competent leadership of the organization’s staff. The Artistic and Managing Director reports to the board of the association.

The position is a fixed-term appointment for a period of four years. The term may be renewed once.

Responsibilities include
– the daily management of Oslo Kunstforening
– development of strategy, exhibition programme, and events
– implementation and communication of the exhibition programme
– personnel management
– financial management and reporting
– preparation of meetings for the governing bodies of the association
– practical facilitation of the exhibition spaces
– maintaining contact with partners, politicians, and public administration

Requirements
– a high level of artistic expertise and strong knowledge of Norwegian and international contemporary art
– a clear vision for artistic programming and institutional development
– relevant education in the field of art
– leadership experience, including responsibility for staff
– extensive curatorial experience
– experience with financial and budget management
– experience with planning and strategic development
– experience in applying for funding
– experience with communication and public engagement
– strong written and verbal communication skills in Norwegian and English
