Hanne Tyrmi was born in 1954 and educated at SHKS (The National College of Art and Design) from 1981 to 1985. She debuted at the Autumn Exhibition (Høstutstillingen) in 1986 and held her first solo exhibition at Galleri Føyner in Oslo in 1988. Since then, she has participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions, ranging from Rio de Janeiro to Tjøme, from the Museu de Arte Moderna in São Paulo to Bergen Art Association.

At the exhibition in Oslo Kunstforening, Hanne Tyrmi presents “instruments.”
These are everyday objects most people can relate to, a “play” with personal memories. In one room, 72 wall objects made of aluminium wire hang on the walls. These pieces are inspired by the “kitchen world,” filled with drawers of strange tools and instruments. On the floor stands a sculptural group, a “still life” consisting of a bucket, brooms, and a cloth. All of the aluminium objects are created using techniques such as wrapping, knotting, and knitting.

In the other room, a “sickbed” made of solid wood stands in the centre of the floor. Hair objects are mounted on the walls, inspired by gynaecological instruments. In preparing the exhibition, Hanne studied gynecological tools. She also explored mid, and post war “housewife books,” rediscovering the kitchen world of her childhood.

She works with contrasting materials, hard, shiny metal and soft, black hair and latex. Both the aluminium wire, the hair, and the latex thread have required the development and testing of new techniques and methods in terms of processing, joining, and surface treatment.
